Personal de una empresa privada contratada por EPEC para excavaciones que permitan el cableado eléctrico subterráneo, halló restos óseos en calle Sáenz Peña.
El Prof. César Cabanillas, presidente del Centro Municipal de Estudios Históricos, informó que lo desenterrado será sometido a pericias científicas, presumiéndose que corresponderían a restos de seres humanos.
El historiador indicó que se trataría de víctimas de la epidemia de cólera que afectó seriamente a nuestra ciudad y gran parte del país en la década de 1860. Al ser alta la cantidad de muertes, el antiguo cementerio de Frayle Muerto que estaba ubicado en esa zona, se vio desbordado por lo que los cadáveres eran sepultados fuera del predio.
También había razones religiosas, ya que los no bautizados no podían recibir sepultura en ese camposanto, teniendo en cuenta que el tema de las defunciones solo era manejado por la Iglesia Católica.
Es de hacer notar que asimismo se han hallado restos óseos de humanos en otros puntos de la ciudad, debido a que en muchos casos si la muerte se producía en la vía pública, eran sepultados en el lugar porque los pobladores no querían tomar contacto con los cadáveres por temor a contagiarse de cólera.
El Prof. Cabanillas indicó además que esta gran cantidad de defunciones dio origen tiempo después a la creación del “San Gerónimo”, primer cementerio público con que contó la ciudad.
El próximo paso es que los restos sean evaluados por expertos de instituciones oficiales y tras las pruebas científicas correspondientes, el Centro Municipal de Estudios Históricos determinará el destino final de los mismos.
